Synopsis:
After the opening of Whether the Weather — the exhibition that presents the outcome of PARALAXE of the artistic residency at Instituto Geofísico da Universidade do Porto (Geophysics Institute) —, Exposição Satélite is the second presentation of the project, embracing collaborative works and the dialogue in between public, investigators and artists.
Curatorial Text
Exposição Satélite (Satellite Exhibition) brings together different processes from PARALAXE project, in partnership with Instituto Geofísico da Universidade do Porto, that reveal the engagement with researchers, scientific materials, and some of the work in progress by more than 20 invited artists and collaborations with art researchers, as a way to think the links between scientific and artistic contexts. After launching website www.paralaxe.space and concluding the artistic residency at IGUP with the opening of the exhibition Whether the Weather, this exhibition presents itself as a satellite point of this first PARALAXE edition — a project’s laboratory that shows all its creation stages and put it to debate in an open conversation in between collaborators and public.
About Paralaxe
Paralaxe has its origin in the greek parállaxis, which means change. Frequently used in the scientific field, it refers to the apparent difference in the location of an object from different points of observation. Such a word points out the lack of accurateness in a self-centered perception and, therefore, it is established as a metric system by triangulation, by analysing the same thing from different points of view. This way, Paralaxe project intends to establish itself as an art research project through artistic practice in residency: focusing on disciplinary intersection, it occupies apparently foreign territories to bring other perspectives and and generate new dialogues.
The scientific context appears in the project as a stimulus to the research, both from the connections and the confrontation of methodologies, practices and paradigms. Thus, Instituto Geofísico da Universidade do Porto (Geophysics Institute) became, in 2020, the research site for artists in residency, for the satellite collaborations - artists and researchers that created content for the digital platform www.paralaxe.space —, exhibitions and a final publication.
